WDET, a public radio station broadcasting from Wayne State University in Detroit, created and fielded a non-scientific survey , "What would it take to get you to move to the city of Detroit?" Expecting about 1,000 people to respond, they got more than they anticipated: 2,200 people completed a portion of the survey; 1,700 completed the entire questionnaire.

Battle of the Bricks Student Competition

Recognizing the need to build awareness within communities of color about the career and life opportunities possible in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields, Aaron Dworkin has founded the Battle of the Bricks competition for Black and Latino students. The competition challenges students eight to 17 to solve real world problems by creating unique designs out of LEGO(R) bricks.

The organization's website says with Battle of the Bricks (http://www.battlebricks.org), "we are working to launch the first-of-its-kind national competitive initiative incorporating engineering, design, architecture and other scientific principles for young Black and Hispanic students, which will showcase and cultivate the talents of the top young students who represent the future in the fields of science and math. Overall, we want to inspire and nurture curiosity and core scientific skill-sets in those who are most underrepresented in our country's science professions."

Dworkin also founded the successful Sphinx organization, which promotes participation in classical music among Blacks and Latinos. He is also a member of the National Council on the Arts and a member of the Obama National Arts Policy Committee

WAN and Buro Happold are asking the 910,000 residents plus millions more friends, visitors and relatives to take a fresh look at that pioneering spirit and to take part in our photo competition. We are asking entrants to join the Spirit of Detroit Facebook page and to upload up to five images, that you either own or have taken and which you believe illustrate ‘The Spirit of Detroit’."

The overall winning image and two runners-up images will be included in The Spirit of Detroit photo exhibition, opening in London on February 9th 2011 in Newman St in London’s West End.

Detroit's Communication and Media Arts High School chosen to receive makeover on new NBC series “School Pride"

Executive producers Cheryl Hines (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and Denise Cramsey (“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”) selected Detroit's Communication and Media Arts High School (CMA) to receive a much-needed building makeover.

Housed in a building built in 1959, CMA was a candidate for closure this month due to its poor condition and the anticipated expense of repairs. Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb learned the producers were looking for schools for the show and nominated CMA for a makeover. He removed it from the closure list after learning it was a finalist.

“CMA has a very high graduation rate and virtually all the graduates go on to college. They deserve to learn in an environment that will help them achieve even more,” Bobb said. “I’m excited to see all the changes that will take place, but the show’s crew and the students of this small school cannot do it alone. We need the entire city to come out and help make this the best makeover in the country. In a time of highly limited resources, we need to marshal all our community resources to create 21st century learning environments for our students.”

The reality series, debuting this fall and airing Fridays at 8 p.m. on NBC, empowers communities to take charge and improve their broken schools, motivating students, parents and teachers to renovate their neighborhood educational institutions. Making use of local businesses and skilled local labor, the community will make over classrooms, public spaces, athletic facilities, and art and music halls. The changes at CMA will truly be a community effort, with “School Pride” producers planning to recruit a large number of volunteers from the local area to work on the transformation effort.

While a team of experts will lend expertise in the makeover process, it’s ultimately up to the students, teachers and community to execute the restoration. “School Pride” cameras will document their progress, revealing multiple surprises along the way and, ultimately, concluding with the unveiling of a brand-new, completely transformed school. Months later, the school will be revisited to determine the effects – such as renewed sense of pride and an increase in student achievement scores – the transformation has ignited.

The “School Pride” crew and hosts will document the makeover Aug. 1-7, 2010, and the public is encouraged to sign up to participate or donate goods and/or services to the effort. Volunteers will be needed for tasks ranging from painting and serving food to skilled trades such as electrical and plumbing work.

Detroit Public Schools is soliciting proposals for the design and
construction of the new Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School,
which will be rebuilt at its current site.

The high school will consist of 185,000 square feet of space and serve
1,200 students with a Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics
(STEM) focus. Amenities will include a Community Health Center, full
competition swimming pool and gymnasium. The existing auditorium will
be preserved and updated.

Construction will be completed prior to the Fall 2011 opening of
school. The King High School project is part of the district’s
Facilities Master Plan. It is the first school to be built thanks to
the passage of Proposal S, a bond referendum voters approved on Nov. 3
to take advantage of $500.5 million in stimulus dollars that President
Barack Obama made available to build new schools and modernize
existing schools.

Free After-School Urban Design Program Begins

A new, free after-school urban design program has begun for high school students. Classes began October 22, 2009. The program will focus on Depot Town, Ypsilanti and will use the free modeling program Sketchup (http://sketchup.google.com/) to bring students' ideas for improving the neighborhood to life.

Classes will be held on Thursdays from 3-5pm at Eastern Michigan's Halle Library, Room 111. The class is open to high school students, completely free, and will run for 8 consecutive weeks (excluding Thanksgiving).

Walter Hood is Professor and former Chair of Landscape Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, and principal of Hood Design in Oakland, CA. Hood has worked in a variety of settings including architecture, landscape architecture, art, community and urban design, planning and research. He was a fellow at the American Academy in Rome in Landscape Architecture, 1997. He has exhibited and lectured on his professional projects and theoretical works nationally and abroad. His work was recently featured in the "Open, New Designs For Public Spaces", Van Allen Institute, NY, and his firm designed the gardens and landscape for the New De Young Museum, San Francisco with Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron. He is currently designing the landscape for the Autry National Museum in Los Angeles, CA,; designing an archeological garden within the context of the South Lawn Project at the University of Virginia, and developing a set of monuments and markers for a six mile waterfront trail in Oakland, CA.

NOMA Detroit Celebrates Roger & Fran Margerum

The National Organization of Minority Architects, Detroit Chapter honored architect Roger Margerum with the Lifetime Achievement Award. He is the first to receive the award from NOMA-Detroit. Mr. Margerum’s architectural designs and textiles designed and weaved by his late wife, Fran, were on display throughout the evening.

Craig L. Wilkins, PhD, AIA, NOMA, the Director of the Detroit Community Design Center and an instructor at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, has been given the Collaborative Practice Award by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. The award recognizes "the programs that demonstrate how faculty, students, and community/civic clients work to realize common objectives."

"Each year the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture honors architectural educators for exemplary work in areas such as building design, community collaborations, scholarship, and service. The award-winning professors inspire and challenge students, contribute to the profession's knowledge base, and extend their work beyond the borders of academia into practice and the public sector." (from the ACSA website)

Dr. Wilkins also participated in the conference, "Unspoken Borders: The Ecologies of Inequality," hosted by the Black Student Alliance at The University of Pennsylvania School of Design. The conference sought to bring social equity back to architectural discourse. Said Dr. Wilkins, "Architects have been skittish about addressing large-scale social issues ever since the profession’s notorious Pruitt-Igoe-style failures in the 1960’s." Other participants included Teddy Cruz, Maurice Cox and Kian Goh.

NOMA-D Celebrates Lifetime Achievement of Architect Roger Margerum, FAIA

The National Organization of Minority Architects will celebrate the Lifetime Achievement of Detroit architect, Roger Margerum, and pay tribute to his late wife, Fran L. Margerum. Mr. Margerum’s designs and Mrs. Margerum’s textile work will be on display throughout the evening of celebration.

An African-American architect who graduated from the University of Illinois in 1955 with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Mr. Margerum began his career working with Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM) in Chicago and Smith, Hinchman and Grylls (SmithGroup) in Detroit. His major projects included the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO and Hart Plaza in Detroit.

Mr. Margerum later opened his own firm with locations in Detroit and Chicago. His successful career has spanned half a century, and he has received numerous honors for his work. His 45-degree polygonal residence was recently featured in the Detroit Free Press and the Fall 2008 issue of Detroit Home magazine.

Mrs. Margerum was an educator who taught students throughout the United States. She was founder of Professional Adult Reading Services, a successful private business that provided individual reading instruction to adults. Mrs. Margerum was also an accomplished weaver with patrons in Detroit and Chicago.

The National Organization of Minority Architects, Detroit Chapter, along with co-sponsor, Hamilton Anderson Associates Architects, will host the award celebration and tribute Thursday, April 16, 2009 from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM at University of Michigan Orchestra Place, 3663 Woodward Ave., Suite 150, Detroit, MI 48201.

Urban Memories: The Quilt & Fabric Art of Carole Harris

The colorful and richly innovative quilts and textiles of Detroit artist and interior designer Carole Harris, whose work has been nationally recognized and graces many public and private collections, will be exhibited at the Ellen Kayrod Gallery at the Hannan House.

LEED Exam Studying Advice

Hello NOMA-D. Here's a suggested study methodology which I used for v2.1. The pressure is on because LEED 2009 in due out later this year. Legend has it that exams always get harder or a higher level of difficulty is added to the newer exams. So my advice would be to take it now.

First some prerequisites:

1. Get the reference guide. The LEED for New Construction v2.2 Reference Guide at http://www.usgbc.org/Store/PublicationsList.aspx?CMSPageID=1518

2. Get a copy of a suitable mock exam with answers. (I used the *** v2.1 mock exam with answers)

3. Get access to the USGBC website. [Membership required]

4. Schedule the exam. It doesn't cost anything to move it, if you do so more than two business days before your exam. (Check that.) Scheduling the exam forces you to move on studying. Also, Prometric didn't charge me until after I took the exam, so there doesn't seem to be any "upfront" cost to doing this. (Check this as well.)

Now, how to study:

A. Download the LEED-NC checklist-v2.2.xls from USGBC (excel format).

B. Use this as a basis to make your own study/cheat sheet.

C. In excel add, three more columns with the headings: Requirements, Submittals, References

D. Start filling these out. The act of looking them up and filling them out kinda forces you to go through the reference book step-by-step. Filling out your cheat sheet also gives you a "goal" and sense of accomplishment. If you just try to read the book alone, it get's pretty dry and seems a bit overwhelming. (BONUS: when you're done with your sheet, it also gives you a quick reference to some of the major contents of the exam.)

E. But, do read the entire reference guide

F. Review definitions at the end ofthe Reference guide.

G. Go to USGBC website and review the following:

- process to certify a building, including steps to take. Generally how fees are calculated, review periods, and under what LEED (NC, CI, etc.)?

- CIR process: how to do it.

H. Test yourself.

I. Do the mock exam and check your answers. Review weak areas. Move the exam date if you're freaking out.

J.Take the exam.

Good evening,

I am sending this out to as many of you as possible. Please feel free to forward to other professionals and students as you may see fit.

Shortly after the conclusion of our Annual Conference in Washington, DC, the necessity of establishing a mid-year conference just for the region occurred to me.
I have had the opportunity to discuss this with members of INOMA and the student chapter presidents at IIT and UIUC.

We are, on very short-notice, planning a very condensed conference for Saturday, January 17 and Sunday, January 18, 2009 on the campus of the University of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign. Thanks to the UIUC NOMAS chapter, and in particular, Leeswan Bolden, we have secured both the Architecture Building and Temple Hoyne Buell Hall for these dates.

We do realize that January will be upon us very quickly, and many of you may feel that this effort is extremely aggressive, however; this particular weekend is just before MLK day and for the students, is probably the least intrusive on their academic schedules. Also, I would like to emphasize that this conference is not to compete nor replace the annual UIUC Symposium. In fact, we would strongly encourage NOMAS to continue planning and maintain the tradition of the symposium.

This conference would consist of a much focused event in the customary, three-tracks (students, interns and professionals) and the intent is to provide immediately-useful information which can be applied directly to a very purposeful event. (Click on schedule at right.) By which, on the first day, I propose:

For the students: a half-day resume and portfolio workshop with the opportunity to rewrite resumes on the spot. Immediately following this workshop would be a half-day job fair in which all NOMA firms are invited as well as, majority firms within the Midwest region.

For the professional interns: a full-day (or possibly, a two-day if the interns are willing to come in on Friday) ARE Workshop on both General Structures and Lateral Forces conducted by Marc Mitalski PE of Illinois-based, PREPA.R.E. Immediately following this workshop, any intern who is eligible, should be confident about taking and passing these difficult exams.

For the professionals: a half-day seminar on the State of the Economy and its impact on the Architectural Industry and a LEED Exam Workshop (with practice tests) conducted by Everblue Energy.

The second day would consist of a half-day charette of teams composed of both professionals and students and the second half of the day would be a body meeting in which a structure similar to the national body would be put in place at the regional level. For instance, I believe that the region needs to have at the very least, a treasurer, secretary, membership chair and two student representatives, among others.

In order to be successful, we need your input, willingness and commitment to attend this event. We need participation from all professional and student chapters from Detroit to Manhattan, Kansas. There will, of course, be a registration fee, which has not been determined, however; be very confident that the registration fee will be significantly less than was the fee for the national conference. However; the first requirement for registration will be the payment of National dues. We cannot extend invitations to firms for the job fair nor sign any agreements regarding workshops without your commitment therefore; please respond to me directly regarding your willingness to attend by this Friday, November 7, 2008, so that we might plan accordingly.

An African-American Architect who graduated from the University of Illinois in 1955 with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Roger started his career working with some of the most prestigious architectural firms in the country designing modern community centers, churches, businesses and schools. He has also played an instrumental role in spearheading joint venture projects with other minority architects in Detroit.

Mr. Margerum later decided to start his own firm with locations in Detroit and Chicago where he continued to have a long successful career spanning half a century, receiving numerous honors for his work within the profession.

At an early age Roger developed an interest in art and drawing and was enrolled in weekend classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. It was at the Institute were he practiced and developed his skills and passion for his craft. During this time he was exposed to various influences, particularly painter Georges-Pierre Seurat and his masterpiece "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte." Another influence was African-American football player Buddy Young. Both influences served as an inspiration that has guided Roger throughout his life to challenge the boundaries of the ordinary and strive for excellence under adversity.

The lecture, facilty tour, and lunch are co-sponsored by the Detroit Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects, the Board of Education of the City of Detroit, Hamilton Anderson Associates Architects, and the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System.

NOMA Conference Begins Today in D.C.

The National Organization of Minority Architects begins its 36th International Conference and Exposition today. The Conference runs through October 4th. There will be workshops and seminars for professionals and students, a jury of professional designs, a student design competition, and an exhibit entitled "2% Women of Color," highlighting that population of the architecture profession.

Pioneering Detroit Architect Roger Margerum's 45-degree polygonal residence is featured in the Fall 2008 issue of Detroit Home magazine, which is on newsstands now. The structure, completed in 2005, is located on Detroit's east side.

Margerum attended the University of Illinois and received his architecture degree in 1955. Formerly employed with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and Smith, Hinchman and Grylls (SmithGroup), he went on to open his own firm with offices in Detroit and Chicago.

Registered architect, Dr. Craig Wilkins, to discuss his recent publication The Aesthetics of Equity: Notes on Race, Space, Architecture and Music.

There are fewer than 1,500 African American architects licensed in the United States. Yet, there are 40,000 physicians. Why has the discipline of architecture been resistant?

Dr. Craig Wilkins, University of Michigan College of Architecture and Urban Planning lecturer, addresses this and other issues in his provocative, award-winning book. The Aesthetics of Equity He examines the discipline of architecture and it’s resistance to African Americans at all levels.

Dr. Wilkins observes, “how race, space, music and architecture are tied to the larger concerns of our society and how we, as citizens, can use that connectedness to make a difference.” He asks the question “who or what is responsible for the decisions that keep both the profession of architecture and the built environment itself, the exclusive property of a particular ethnicity?”

Winner of the 2008 Montaigne Medal, The Aesthetics of Equity was recognized for its potential to illuminate, progress and redirect thought. Each year, the Eric Hoffer Award for books presents the Montaigne Medal to the most thought-provoking titles. The medal is given in honor of the great philosopher Michel de Montaigne, who influenced people such as Shakespeare, Descartes, Emerson, Nietzsche, Rousseau, and Eric Hoffer.

The National Organization of Minority Architects, Detroit chapter, is hosting a discussion and book signing with Dr. Wilkins on August 1 at 4:30 PM at Borders Book & Music, Compuware Building, 1012 Woodward Ave., Detroit, MI 48226.
